Ben ainslie presents inspirational young sailor with Prestigious award

Chris Eames from Lisburn was presented with the prestigious RYA NI Young Sailor of the Year Award 2009 at the Tullet Prebon London International Boat Show. The awards were presented by sailing legend Ben Ainslie, a previous winner himself, and recognise the outstanding achievements of youth sailors across the country.

Chris was voted RYA NI’s Regional Young Sailor of the Year 2009 last autumn following his outstanding sailing season. Chris finished  1st  in the UK Topper Nationals 2009 and is first NI sailor to achieve this, he was also  1st in the Irish Topper Nationals 2009, and after moving up to the Laser he finished  1st  in the Irish Laser 4.7 Nationals, and  1st  Laser 4.7 at the RYANI Volvo Youth Championships.  Chris was also a member of the RYA GBR Topper Squad last year.

Chris was amongst thirteen RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year winners who are voted for by RYA affiliated clubs and associations.  These young sailors have made a significant impact on youth sailing, ranging from gold medal winning achievements and overcoming adversity, to the huge amount of hard work and effort they give back to their clubs.

Chris and family were treated to an action packed VIP day at the show, thanks to Pantaenius Yacht Insurance.

Rolex Miami OCR Jan 24th - 30th 2010

Three sailors from Northern Ireland are competing in this year's Rolex Miami OCR James Espey BYC in Laser Standard, Tiffany Brien RNIYC in Laser Radial, and Lauren Martel BYC in Ladies Match Racing. Follow the action at  http://rmocr.ussailing.org/

Established in 1990, the annual Rolex Miami OCR, organized by US Sailing, is sailed on Biscayne Bay and features

elite-level competition in the classes selected for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Foreign teams are

attracted because of the traditionally tough competition offered, plus the fact that the regatta forms the second

of seven events on the newly formed ISAF Sailing World Cup. A long-time ISAF Grade 1 world-ranking event

as well as a US Sailing team qualifier, the Rolex Miami OCR will celebrate its 21st Anniversary when it returns

to “The Grove” (Coconut Grove, FL).

SOPHIE MURPHY WINS IRL PLACE FOR YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES 2010

Sophie Murphy wins a IRL Female Place for the Youth Olympic Games 2010 Singapore

Sophie Murphy competed in the European Qualifier Trials for the inaugural 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

33 female sailors competed in the Byte C11 Girls class, which was the European Qualifier Trials for the Youth Olympics Games 2010. Only the top 7 nations would secure a place for Singapore from this qualifier event. Sophie finished as 6th Nation and therefore secure a place for Ireland at the inaugural Olympic Youth Games, which is open to 15-16 year olds.

The competition was very high at the European Qualifier as many of the competitors sail the Byte dinghy as their main boat in their respective countries.

Sophie competed in several European events in the last year but in a Laser. With no previous experience in the Byte class Sophie had to put in every conceivable effort possible to win her very well earned position and result.

Her father Malachy Murphy explained:
"she was able to remain very focused, despite an understandable amount of aprehension in a completely new boat!!  She never worked harded at anything to earn this amazing result. She is very very happy, and we are very very proud."

The inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) will be held in Singapore in August 2010 and feature 100 young sailors competing across four sailing events: Boys Windsurfer – Techno 293; Boys One Person Dinghy – Byte CII; ; Girls Windsurfer – Techno 293 and Girls One Person Dinghy – Byte CII

Team McGovern & Seaton

49er 2010 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, GRAND BAHAMAS

The 2010 49er Worlds Championships were completed over the weekend in the Grand Bahamas. The new World Champions are Spain's Iker Martinez and Xabier Fernandez following on from wins in 2002 and 2004. This is in addition to their Olympic Gold medal from Athens in 2004 and Silver medal from Beijing in 2008.

Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern have begun their first full year of campaigning together on a very solid footing. They needed to finish top 40 to secure ongoing SNI  funding finished 31st position. It is clear that the time they spent training over the winter in Australia paid off as they were 18 positions higher than their 2009 result. The funding will ensure they have the resources to move further up this competitive fleet.

The full results are available here

Matt & Ryan had a tremendous result in the Australian Nationals finishing 3rd

Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern have attained an excellent 3rd place in the Australian 49er National Championships. The racing was over four days and the boys were consistent, in 4th place up until day four, when they sailed two excellent races and gained a place to finish in the top three.

The boys left home in November to train in Australia with the World Champions and this result proves that it has been worthwhile. Their next event will be in Sydney in December when they will compete against the World's best. Yachting NSW, the organisers of Sail Sydney, are pleased to announce that at the close of entries they had received 222 applications for their annual event to be held from December 5-8 on Sydney Harbour.

Hosted by Woollahra Sailing Club, the second event of the Sail Downunder series is one of only two ISAF Grade 1 events in the southern hemisphere and a strong level of commitment has come from the Olympic classes which is not surprising considering the next summer Olympic Games is less than three years away. Event website http://www.sailsydney.org.au/

Matt & Ryan will then return home on 22nd December, it will only be to celebrate Christmas as they will head off to the World Championships in the Bahamas at the end of the year.

You can follow the progress of Ryan & Matt on their website www.irish49er.com

HRH the Princess Royal, President of the RYA, presented the annual RYA Community and RYA Awards at the 2009 RYA AGM.

A total of 49 volunteer awards were presented to winners hailing from across the UK from as far afield as the Isle of Wight to Northern Ireland.

The RYA Awards and Community Awards acknowledge the importance of volunteers within the sailing and boating communities. They recognise the outstanding contributions, time, effort and experience individuals have made to making it possible for others to enjoy boating and sailing, from establishing clubs, committee participation, to boat maintenance and training.

Forty-nine Community Awards were projected across three categories recognising; Lifetime Commitment, Outstanding Contribution and Youth.

Northern Ireland had two award winners in this year's round of nominations. RYA Regional Award Winner Doug Smyth who was nominated by the RYA NI Executive Committee for his contribution to sailing in Northern Ireland and  a unique contribution to RYA NI particularly in respect of the introduction of effective governance and management arrangements.

RYA Lifetime Commitment Award winner John Lewis from County Antrim Yacht Club. John was nominated by his club for his continual support and commitment to developing their club and their  sailors.

All the winners enjoyed a celebratory lunch and were presented with a commemorative medallion and certificate by HRH, The Princess Royal.

Rod Carr Chief Executive of the RYA said: “Every one of the Award winners has exceeded the reasonable expectations of their fellow volunteers, club members and the boating community in general and the amount of work they put in is outstanding. These people are an inspiration to us all and it is my pleasure to recognise and celebrate their sheer hard work and commitment through these awards.”

RYA NI VOLVO YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ASSOCIATION WITH MCCREADY SAILBOATS

In contrast to the South East Zone, too much wind (25 knots plus) greeted young sailors at the Northern Ireland event last weekend meaning racing was postponed for a couple of hours until conditions improved.

It was worth the wait as the wind moderated to a steady 15 knots and along with it came some sunshine making for a great day of racing.

The Laser 4.7’s were first out on the race course with the Toppers joining them after one race. A further two races went ahead in both classes with the following sailors achieving top three prizes at the event:

Laser Radial: 1st: Chris Penny 2nd: Robbie Gilmore 3rd: Oliver Loughead

Laser 4.7: 1st: Chris Eames 2nd: Fionnan Martin 3rd:  Ben Regan

Topper: 1st: James O’Hare 2nd: Eoin Curran 3rd: Laura Gilmore

Topper 4.2: 1st: Rory Fekkes 2nd: Peter Gilmore 3rd: Emily Hill

Chris Penney scoops  NI youth sailing  victory

RYA NI Youth Squad sailor Chris Penney finished off his successful season with a convincing win over the weekend (26-27 September) at the RYA NI Volvo Youth Championships in Association with McCready Sailboats.

Posting bullets in four of the six races Chris easily walked away with NI Youth Cup.

Also sailing to victory at the event, which saw some challenging high winds on Sunday’s second day, was Carlingford Lough Yacht Club  sailor James O’Hare. The 14 year-old sailing in his single-handed Topper dinghy posted a consistently high score over his five races scoring 1,6,3,3,1 giving him a three point lead over second placed Eoin Curran and a well fought junior title.

Other significant achievements at the weekend were:

GBR Topper Squad sailor Chris Eames  sailed to victory in the 4.7 Class

Overall Lady’s Cup went to Laura Gilmore from Strangford Lough Yacht Club

Best School results and winner of the School’s Cup went to Methodist College Belfast.

Hosted by East Antrim Boat Club in Larne, the Championship saw no fewer than 80 boats compete across 5 RYA-supported Junior  & Youth dinghy classes.

The RYA NI Volvo Youth Championships in association with McCready Sailboats was one of nine Zone and Home Country Championships taking place throughout Great Britain this weekend, with some 1000 children all aged under 16 taking part in total.

The RYA Volvo Zone and Home Country Championships traditionally mark the end of the Junior racing season and the start of a hard winter’s training. They are a key event for any young sailor wishing to be selected for the RYA Zone and Home Country squads, which are the first step on the pathway to Olympic Classes sailing.

Volvo Ocean Race Galway Stopover Photo Exhibition at Bloomfield Shopping Centre

During the Volvo Ocean Race Galway Stopover earlier this year, Look West.ie and Pix.ie hosted a photo sharing competition which proved to be immensely successful. Over 17,000 photos of the sailing festival were uploaded, making it Ireland’s biggest ever photo sharing project. An initiative from the Western Development Commission now brings it to  tour an exhibition of the best 100 photographs nationally in the lead up to Christmas.

The photography exhibition will be placed in various shopping centres throughout the country where it will be free for the public to swing by and while away a spare 20 mins. The exhibition will be placed in Bloomfield shopping centre for the week starting the 19th Oct. You might not have time to view all 17,000 photos, you can click on the link below for a taster!

Irish Laser 2000 Championships Report

On the weekend of 30th & 31st of May at Carlingford Lough Yacht Club, the inaugural Laser 2000 Irish Championship (the Shamrock Trophy) was awarded to CLYC members Barry McCartin and Finbar Bradley, co-inciding with the IDRA 14s' (Irish Dinghy Racing Association) Northern Championship, and it was a brilliant weekend, both on the water, and at the Club house.

The weather was extremely kind, drenching the Laser 2000s and the IDRAs with sunshine, and providing up to 25 knots of wind on Saturday and more gentle conditions on Sunday. Visiting boats came from Chichester and Ballyholme and it is hoped that the feedback they provide will ensure that many more Laser 2000s from GB and throughout Ireland will attend next year.

Barry and Finbar, who happen to be campaigning for the 2012 Olympics in the 470 class, borrowed a spare Laser 2000 and led the way in every race except Race 5 on Sunday, the winners of which were John and Pauline Cox from Chichester YC. John and Pauline took a well-earned second place overall. Paddy Rooney and Catherine McDonagh from CLYC won 3rd place overall.

The fleet had its fair share of capsizing, and in Race 1, Michael O'Hare and Osmond Morris (CLYC) managed to snap their mast in two, but were back on the water for Race 2 with a back-up boat. Michael and Osmond finished the event in 4th position, pipping David and Richard Cranley (CLYC) for the best CLYC non-placed boat by the first best rule. However, they generously shared their prize with David and Richard.

Sixth place went to CLYC's Henry McLaughlin Junior (3rd place in the Laser 4.7s at the ISA Youth Nationals & Junior Pathway Championship 2009 at Schull, Co Cork) and James O'Hare (2009 Eric Twiname Topper Champion). The prize for combined age of helm, crew and boat of over 100 years, was won by Henry McLaughlin and Pat Dunbar.

Paul Bradley was congratulated for his superb course-setting (a mixture of Olympic Triangle and Windward-Leeward courses) which was up to his usual standard of race management. Thanks were also given to the event sponsors Norfolk Line, McCready Sailboats, Noble Marine and Seatruck.

This holiday weekend in the Republic of Ireland is the traditional date for the IDRAs to visit CLYC. The fleet has been coming to CLYC for this event for many years and will continue to do so. However, CLYC will endeavour to adjust the date for next year's Laser 2000 Irish Championship to accommodate a maximum turnout from GB. Why not bring over your Laser 2000 for next year's event and spend a week cruising on beautiful Carlingford Lough?

The details, including results and photos, are all available on the CLYC website, at www.clyc.info Then go to SAILING -> Laser 2000 Irish Championships.

OCR Princess Sofia Trophy

RYA NI Performance Manager Richard Honeyford accompanied four NI sailors to the prestigious Princess Sofia Trophy held in Palma de Mallorca.  Jo Hopkins from the Sports Institute (SINI) also provided sports science support to the NI sailors at the event.

With 630 boats, 880 sailors 40 nations from the five continents represented, the Princesa Sofía MAPFRE sees record figures in this post-Olympic year, as explained by the regatta General manager and president of the Executive Commission of the Consortium Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía, Jaume Carbonell. The Majorcan event is marked this year by its inclusion in the ISAF Sailing World Cup, a new Olympic sailing circuit formed by only seven events from around the world with the Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía MAPFRE as the only Spanish regatta and the first event of the circuit in Europe.

This event is just a warm up for some of the NI sailors and for Tiffany Brien it was her first post youth squad, major international olympic class  regatta  where she rubbed shoulders with Olympic Gold Medallist Anna Tunnicliffe.  Tiffany finished a creditable 32nd and scored an 8th place in the last race.
